Activities vary according to the time of quarter too. A "typical day" in week 2 or 3 might see a over a dozen library instructional sessions to academic classes.

Dear Gary, Speaking of Cafe 451, it would be very nice if we could put up a poster there, commemorating Ray Bradbury. I'm not sure how many people "get" the reason for the cafe's name.

There have been a number of Higher Ed mobile apps developed over the years. These projects have been extremely popular with campus administrations and libraries alike. They have also been very popular with students and faculty. It's great to see UCLA Library into this marketplace with it’s own app with a different approach to development than most of the other mobile offerings. The UCLA Library App has been developed exclusively by students. The app is in a number of ways similar to previous offerings, but the student involvement from conception to release offers insight into service offerings that we would never get from a professionally developed service.

Another comment re: staffing

I think we also need to be cognizant of how all of our job descriptions are evolving to support digital scholarship. Having a Digital Scholarship librarian position is all well and good - but the move towards data-driven/spatially analyzed research and curriculum means that those of us without such a title also need to have these skill sets in our portfolios. This is driven by our academic departments and the information landscape in general. A good example of this are the technical skills/competencies that Government Information and Map Librarians are required to have (as outlined by their professional organizations), e.g. MAGERT Core Competencies http://bit.ly/6uU4g1
Cheers,
k.

Hi Gary!

Thanks for sharing this talk -- it helps me to better understand the vision of the new research commons. I wanted to find out what kind of planning assistance we can provide. I'm particularly interested in the GIS and Data support that will be available in this facility. I would happy to get input from the Urban Planning and Public Policy students and faculty.

Thanks,
Kris
