There has been a slight delay in reopening the central stairwell, which connects the first floor with the A level and the second floor. It will now reopen on Monday, May 9. In the meantime, visitors can use the stairwell at the front of the building or the elevators to reach all floors.
The central stairwell connecting the A level and first and second floors, which has been closed for resurfacing, is expected to reopen on Wednesday, May 4.
In the meantime, the walls of the front stairwell, which connects all the floors, are being painting. It has not been closed, but visitors are asked to exercise caution when using it because the steps and landings are covered with dropcloths. The painting should be completed by the end of the day on Friday, May 6.
Starting on Monday, April 25, the central stairwell, which connects from the first floor to the lower level and second floor, will be closed for refinishing. The closure is expected to last through the end of the week.
During the closure, the lower and upper floors will be accessible via the elevators and the front stairwell.
The cork flooring on the Research Library A level is scheduled to be installed this week. The prep work should begin on Wednesday, with the cork being installed on Thursday and Friday.
All collections, services, and facilities on the A level will remain accessible throughout, though access routes to them may temporarily change as necessary.
Construction has started on a “tunnel” through the lobby, which will shield visitors from construction taking place throughout the first floor. The passage will run from inside the front doors to near the current location of the circulation desk. First-floor access to the central stairwell and the east bank of elevators will remain unchanged.
The first floor is no longer accessible via the west bank of elevators because construction has started on the west end of the floor. It remains accessible via the east bank of elevators, which are the ones centrally located near the circulation desk, as well as by the stairwell to all floors at the front of the building.
With the exception of the circulation desk, all of the Research Library’s collections and services have been moved off the first floor. A sign near the entrance directs visitors to new locations and suggests quiet locations for study, but if you have any questions, ask at the circulation desk, the service desk downstairs in the study commons, or the reference desk in the reference reading room at the west end of the A level.
