UCLA Library Blog FAQ

1. How do I get to the Library Blog Service?

The Library Blog service is located at http://blogs.library.ucla.edu. To read a particular blog, choose it from the Updated Blogs section.

2. Who can create a blog?

Any UCLA Library staff member or department can create a blog. UCLA students, faculty, staff, and the general public may not create blogs at this time; however, they are encouraged to read and comment on blogs.

3. What’s the purpose of a blog?

Blogs provides a vehicle to communicate information about activities, services, and collections to users quickly; they also enable users to offer feedback and express their opinions easily, quickly, and transparently.

4. What are the rights and responsibilities of the blog creators?

Blog creators manage the content and design of their blogs, which must adhere to the UCLA Library editorial style guide and the UCLA graphic identity program guidelines.  Library Communications staff members can answer any editorial or design questions; contact Dawn Setzer by email or by phone at extension 50746.

5. What content can be posted on a Library blog?

Blogs should contain content about Library services, collections, activities, and issues that is relevant to UCLA students, faculty, staff, donors, and the general public.  Note that this service does not support blogs created for internal staff activities.

The blog’s creator may choose to allow users to post comments; if user comments are enabled, spam filters and other procedures will exclude postings unrelated to the blog’s topic, but the Library will not otherwise monitor or exclude user comments based on their content.

All content must comply with the University of California Electronic Communications Policy, which states:

The University of California encourages the use of electronic communications to  share information and knowledge in support of the University’s mission of education,  research and public service and to conduct the University’s business. To this end,  the University supports and provides interactive electronic communications services  and facilities for telecommunications, mail, publishing, and broadcasting.

Under allowable use, the policy states:

The University encourages the use of electronic communications resources and makes them widely available to the University community. Nonetheless, the use of  electronic communications resources is limited by restrictions that apply to all  University property and by constraints necessary for the reliable operation of  electronic communications systems and services. The University reserves the right to  deny use of its electronic communications services when necessary to satisfy these  restrictions and constraints.¼br> ¼br> In general, the University cannot and does not wish to be the arbiter of the  contents of electronic communications. Neither can the University always protect  users from receiving electronic messages they might find offensive.

Regarding ownership of intellectual property the policy states:

Ownership of intellectual property is governed by law, the University of California Policy on Copyright Ownership (1992) and the 2003 Policy on Ownership of Course  Materials, Academic Personnel Policy 020, Special Services to Individuals and  Organizations (Regulation 4), and other University policies and contracts (see  Appendix B, References).

Questions about the appropriateness of content should be directed to the Library webmaster.

6. Does the Library have plans to roll out its blog hosting services to a larger community?

Not at this time. The Library will monitor the traffic and usage of its blogs and will use this information to decide whether to provide a blog hosting service for other users.

Who should I contact if I have questions that aren’t answered here?
