Nominate ASAP! Deadline is June 15, 2013.

The Accelerating Science Award Program (ASAP) is in full swing, and you can nominate yourself, someone else, or a team or group of individuals for the opportunity to have your/their work recognized internationally and to win amazing awards.

Nominees can include researchers, scientists, educators, students, and individuals from virtually any field who have used, applied, or remixed scientific research that was published through Open Access (OA) to make a difference. The scientific research used by nominees must have been published before May 1, 2013 in a peer-reviewed journal or repository recognized by the OA community.

See examples of potential nominations.

This is a great opportunity to support and build awareness of the possibilities that are afforded by open access to scientific research. ASAP hopes to encourage individuals to use research published through Open Access sources to build off of and innovate for the betterment of society.

And did we mention the recognition?

Three awards of $30,000 each

A trip to Washington, D.C. to be honored at Open Access Week in October 2013

Recognition on the ASAP website and in a portfolio to be internationally distributed

ASAP is backed by major sponsors, Google, PLOS and Wellcome Trust, as well as other forerunners and proponents of Open Access like the ACRL, ARL, and Creative Commons. The deadline is June 15, 2013. For more details about ASAP and to submit a nomination, visit http://asap.plos.org.

The Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library is proud to announce the addition of The Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) to UCLA’s already extensive collection of databases. JoVE is a peer reviewed, PubMed-indexed journal that publishes biological, medical, chemical, and physical research in video form. This resource is a particularly exciting addition because it is the very first scientific video journal. Though still helpful, the traditional written journal, accompanied with static pictures or diagrams, cannot fully convey the intricacies of modern scientific research. By taking advantage of recent advances in video-sharing technology, JoVE captures and transmits the intricacies that characterize scientific research.

JoVE includes more than 1,600 video-based visualizations of modern biological techniques and procedures. Video allows for increased transparency of experimental results and decreases the time and effort needed to learn new techniques. Learning and perfecting new experimental techniques can take weeks or even months especially since newly published studies often inadequately describe their techniques.

Curious about Solid Supported Membrane-Based Electrophysiology? It just so happens that a team of researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics and the Goethe University of Frankfurt have recently uploaded an informative introduction into the JoVE database. The nineteen minute video covers a variety of topics such as measuring principles, mounting the cuvette, checking membrane parameters, measuring transporter signals, and data analysis among many others. If you’d prefer to look over a paper-based copy of this research, JoVE also provides a PDF article.

JoVE represents a new movement in scientific publishing and aims to remedy the pricy and laborious nature of modern scientific research. JoVE encourages its users to become active participants by submitting their own video articles to the database. With the Journal of Visualized Experiments, the possibilities of learning essential skills, educating colleagues, and pioneering techniques within the life sciences are endless.

To learn more about JoVE click here.

To experience the full potential of this resource, search for the Journal of Visualized Experiments in the UCLA Library’s database collection. There are currently nine sections of JoVE. The Library subscribes to the following sections: General, Neuroscience, Immunology and Infection, Clinical and Translational Medicine, Bioengineering, and Applied Physics.

A recent study in PLOS ONE showed that sharing your research data can lead to about a 70% increase in citations for your article! Making your data available is a great way to advance knowledge, but your data is no good to anyone if it doesn’t come with contextualizing information that will help others (and you!) make sense of it. Plus, if you’re submitting a data management plan to a funder, you’re required to specify how you’ll describe your data.

Join us to find out more about describing your data to make it easier for you to analyze and others to find and understand. In this hour-long workshop, you’ll learn how to:

find and use the metadata standards that apply to your field of study

adapt or create a metadata schema to describe your unique data

use taxonomies, ontologies, and controlled vocabularies to ensure consistency in your description so your work will be easier to find

Ready to get mappin’?

The new, interactive tool, SimplyMap 2.0 has been licensed on behalf of the entire UCLA community by the Management Library. This web-based mapping program lets you create maps, tabular reports, and rank variables all on one screen. Variables can range from consumer healthcare expenditures to market segments of a chosen demographic. Data used for mapping or ranking can be taken from the 2010 and 2000 Censuses, or variables can be chosen by a specific year.

Location choice can range from the entire US to counties to block groups, and tab functions provide a convenient way to create and work with different maps and tables at the same time. The simple design makes it easy to choose and organize variables and locations, and the map feature has a Google Maps-like quality.

The Tabular Report function is good for comparing the same variable over time, in different regions, or multiple variables. For example, you can track the amount consumers spent on oral hygiene products of a chosen state, county, or zip code in a year, and can even look at future predictions. You can add as many locations, variables, and years as you want and export to an Excel file or email the tables when you’re done.

You can create an account to save your work, or use the link under the Sign In button to login as a guest. You cannot save work in SimplyMap as a guest, but you can export or email most creations.

To access SimplyMap, find it in the UCLA Library’s list of databases, or follow this link!
