UCLA Library Announces 2009 Campbell Student Book Collection Competition

2009 Campbell Student Book Collection Competition This year marks the sixty-first year of the Robert B. and Blanche Campbell Student Book Collection Competition, among the oldest competitions of its kind in the country and one of the most distinguished. UCLA student book collectors, both graduate and undergraduate, are invited to submit their collections for judging and the chance to win awards ranging from $150 to $500. Applications are due by Thursday, May 7, 2009. Awards will be announced at a ceremony in the Charles E. Young Research Library Department of Special Collections at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2009.

Medical Classics lecture by Professor Emily Abel on Tuberculosis in Los Angeles

Dr. Emily Abel, UCLA Professor of Health Services and Women’s Studies, will speak on Tuberculosis and the Politics of Public Health in Los Angeles, 1880-1940 at the UCLA Faculty Center on Tuesday, April 14, at 6:00 p.m.  This lecture will discuss the changing demographics and racial politics in Los Angeles in the earth 20th century in relation to public health and the “health seeker” culture. 

The lecture is open, free of charge, but a reservation is required in order to ensure adequate seating and very light refreshments; call History and Special Collections for the Sciences at 310.825.6940. Full details are available in a printable flyer.  This program is sponsored by UCLA Programs in Medical Classics and by the UCLA School of Public Health.

Copyright and Permissions Issues: What You Need to Know to File

This workshop will explain permissions and copyright issues related to filing theses and dissertations. It will cover how to use work that you have already published, when to obtain permissions for using works published by others, and whether using visuals requires permissions. The workshop will also offer practical advice on how to request permissions and copyright your own thesis. Bring your questions!
Admission is free, and no reservations are required; seating is on a first-come basis.

You might unknowingly surrender your copyright and, along with it, the rights to use and reuse your work as you wish. Find out how to read author agreements and how to negotiate to keep your rights. Learn from colleagues who have efficiently negotiated agreements without risk to their academic advancement.

Taking Charge of Your Health: Finding Health Resources on the Web

computer.jpgHave you ever wondered about the quality of health information you’ve found on the Internet? Have you been overwhelmed by getting hundreds or thousands of results from a search for health information? When health-related questions arise, quality information resources help you be an active participant in your own healthcare. This workshop will provide some of the best starting points for health information. Instructors will give tips for evaluating online information and provide resources to help attendees communicate with healthcare professionals.

Instructors are Kelli Ham, Consumer Health Librarian, National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Southwest Region, and Rikke Ogawa, Emergent Technologies Coordinator for the Biomedical Library.

The workshop, Taking Charge of Your Health: Finding Health Resources on the Web, will occur on Tuesday, January 27th from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Charles E. Young Research Library Presentation Room.
