Finding Clinical Psychological Tests, Surveys, Scales, and Health Assessments at the UCLA Library

Locating information about psychological and health assessment instruments, as well as a copy of the instrument itself, requires searching psychosocial literature. Resources for locating this type of information include Health and Psychosocial Instruments, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Health Services and Sciences Research Resources, and Mental Measurements Yearbook. Please note: a copy of a test is only available from the test producer for purchase to qualified and licensed professionals.

Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI)

Types of instruments include questionnaires, interview schedules, checklists, index measures, coding schemes/manuals, rating scales, projective techniques, vignettes/scenarios, tests in the health fields, psychosocial sciences, organizational behavior, and library and information science. Use HaPI to find descriptions and reviews of tests, and sometimes a copy of the test itself, or where to find a copy. The database covers 1985 to the present, with some measures from before the year 1985 included.

PsycINFO

PsycINFO, available via Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, is the database indexes the scholarly literature in the behavioral sciences, mental health and related fields. CINAHL Plus with Fulltext

CINAHL, the Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature, is the main index to the nursing and allied health literature, also contains both descriptions of selected research instruments and articles about instruments and related research methodologies.

What are Research Instruments in CINAHL?

Research Instruments are measurement tools (for example, questionnaires or scales) designed to obtain data on a topic of interest from research subjects. Research instrument records are researched and created by CINAHL staff. CINAHL Plus includes research instrument records, research instrument validation records, and research instrument utilization records.

Research Instrument Records - provide details on validation and utilization of research instruments. The records indicate which studies have used a specific research instrument and include the purpose/variable measured, sample population, methodology, other instruments, items and questions, where the original study was mentioned and how to obtain the actual research instrument.

Research Instrument Validation and Utilization Records - provide details on the validation and utilization studies of each instrument. They include the purpose/variable measured, sample population, methodology, other instruments, items and questions and the source for the instrument.

HSRR (Health Services and Sciences Research Resources) Database

From the National Information Center on Health Services Research and Health Care Technology (NICHSR), the HSRR database contains descriptions of about 300 research datasets, over 55 instruments/indices, and more than 20 software applications frequently used in health services research and in the behavioral and social sciences. The database includes brief descriptions of research resources, links to PubMed and URLs of providers for additional information or access to the resources. This database is freely available from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Web site.

Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY)

The Mental Measurements Yearbook online is based on the print version published at the University of Nebraska and produced by the Buros Institute. The MMY contains full text information about and reviews of all English-language standardized tests covering educational skills, personality, vocational aptitude, psychology, and related areas as included in the printed Mental Measurements Yearbooks. This database contains data from Yearbooks 9, 1985 - present. For each test, the database provides the name of the test author, publication information, scoring information, and the number of the Mental Measurements Yearbook in which the test was described originally. All tests included have been commercially published. The full text for each record includes an overview of the test, a description of the test materials and time needed, and one or more reviews of the test. The database can be used by professionals such as counselors, guidance workers, psychologists, personnel directors, and educators.
