Need to Use UCLA Electronic Resources from Off Campus? Setting up the Bruin OnLine Proxy Server
It is late at night. The Library is not open. You need to use the library’s databases, or you would like to print the full text of an article that you have found. What can you do? If you are a current UCLA faculty, staff, or student, you can use your home computer to access the same electronic resources that you use on campus.
In order to access electronic journals, books, and journal article databases from off-campus computers you must:
1. Have a valid UCLA Logon ID.
AND
2. Use Bruin OnLine as your Internet provider
OR
Use the Bruin OnLine proxy server or a VPN client.
If you are using the Bruin OnLine (BOL) dial-up service to connect to the Internet, you should have access to all these resources. If you are using a cable modem, DSL, or a different Internet provider other than Bruin OnLine, you can access UCLA resources through the BOL proxy server or a VPN (Virtual Private Network) client. Before the BOL proxy server connects you to a UCLA resource, it will ask for your UCLA Logon ID username and password:
Note to VA users: Bruin OnLine users at the West LA VA must use a VPN client. See the BOL proxy server web page for more information.
Creating your UCLA Logon ID
Bruin OnLine is a collection of services that provides UCLA students, faculty, and staff with remote dial-up and on-campus access to the campus backbone network and the Internet. In order to use Bruin OnLine services, first you must have a UCLA Logon ID. You can create an account by clicking on the icon below:
To create your Bruin OnLine account, you will need two pieces of information:
- Your nine-digit University ID number. For students, this is your nine-digit student ID number. For faculty and staff, this is your nine-digit employee number, which can be found on your pay stub.
- Your date of birth.
If you have forgotten your UCLA Logon ID password, check the BOL web site. You might need to visit the Bruin OnLine help desk in 124 Kerckhoff Hall to reset your password. Your UCLA Logon ID is the first part of your UCLA e-mail address.
Configuring your computer to access the BOL proxy server
Once you have your UCLA Logon ID and password, you will need to read the Bruin OnLine instructions on configuring your computer to access the BOL proxy server. If you have configured your computer but you still can not connect to UCLA resources, carefully re-read all of the instructions and review your configuration settings.
What is the Bruin OnLine proxy server?
The BOL proxy server acts as an agent on behalf of your computer and UCLA electronic resources. The proxy server will pass your requests to connect to UCLA resources between your web browser and the requested web site. Requests that are sent through the proxy server will appear to originate from the UCLA campus. See the Bruin OnLine FAQ for questions about the BOL proxy server.
