The UCLA Library subscribes to the online edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education, but frequent readers may also be interested in receiving via e-mail a daily newsletter with major headlines, forums, etc. You can sign up for news updates on the “Manage Your Account” page. Newsletters available include Academe Today, The Weekly Briefing, Chronicle Review Newsletter, On Hiring, and The Wired Campus.

Drop-in Fall Workshops

This year, the Arts Library is hosting two drop-in workshops for new graduate students in conjunction with the Graduate Writing Center and other libraries on campus. The focus will be on using article databases to find journal articles online. All are welcome to attend.

New interdisciplinary databases

The UCLA Library now subscribes to two interdisciplinary resources from Greenwood Press that are particularly useful for undergraduate courses. Both include full text content relevant to the fine and performing arts, including biographies, primary documents, audition monologues, photographs, and art/architecture information from a range of reference resources.

AMIA Newsbriefs

The Association of Moving Image Archivists now has a blog site called AMIA Newsbriefs, with short news stories on archival and related film issues. Users can also sign up for RSS feeds to the content.

International Film Guide

International Film Guide  After a short hiatus, the International Film Guide (formerly known as the Variety International Film Guide) has returned with Wallflower Press as the new publisher and Turner Classic Movies as the sponsor. The new 2008 edition is now available in Arts Library Reference (PN1993.3.I613 2008), and older volumes remain at the same call number in the stacks.

This year’s edition features profiles of international directors Fatih Akin, Susanne Bier, Guillermo del Toro, Paul Greengrass, and Jia Zhangke. As always the guide also contains summaries of industry news by country, festival reports, and a world box office survey for the 10 top grossing films in select countries.

Modern Drama: Critical Concepts

The Arts Library has added the new 4-volume set, Modern Drama: Critical Concepts (Arts Lib. Reference PN1861.M63 2008), from Routledge. Part of the expensive but useful Critical Concepts series, Modern Drama compiles key essays and articles around general themes [Early Critics and Theorists, General Theory of Modern Drama, New Histories, Actors and Props, Design/Architecture/Image, Philosophy, (Post) Structuralism, and languages].

 The UCLA Library also holds several other Critical Concepts sets from Routledge, including Feminism (ed. Mary Evans), Myth (ed. Robert Segal), Film Theory (ed. Philip Simpson), Hollywood (ed. Thomas Schatz), and Television (ed. Toby Miller).

New Resource: The International Encyclopedia of Communication

International Encyclopedia of CommunicationThe Arts Library now has available in print the new 12-volume International Encyclopedia of Communication (Arts Lib. Reference P87.5 I58 2008), from Blackwell Publishing. This encyclopedia includes entries on a wide range of media topics, including anime, Bollywood, computer games, design, global media, and more.

Original cut of Metropolis found

In archival news, an original cut of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis has been identified at the Museum of Cinema in Buenos Aires. It will likely take years for a restoration of the footage before this version can be distributed more widely.
